At the southeastern edge of Evros prefecture, on the border with Turkey, the Evros River forms an extensive Delta, of international ecological importance.<\/span><\/span> A total of 28 species of amphibians and reptiles, more than 40 species of mammals, and 46 species of fish have been recorded.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

It is one of the most important wetlands not only in Greece but also in Europe.<\/span><\/span> A total area of \u200b\u200b95,000 hectares (80,000 hectares of land and 15,000 hectares of water surface) has been included in the list of protected areas of the International Ramsar Convention due to the important species it hosts.<\/span><\/span> Also, part of the Delta is classified as a Special Protection Area and is proposed as a Site of Community Interest in the Natura 2000 Network.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Thousands of birds find shelter and food in the Evros Delta at all times of the year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

One can distinguish the following characteristic habitats:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>

  • Riparian vegetation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Tame shrublands<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Wet meadows with rushes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Underwater vegetation of salt - brackish waters<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Vegetation of lagoons - fresh waters<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Halophytic vegetation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Sand-rich vegetation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>

    At the Evros Delta Information Center, visitors have the opportunity to participate in organized tours that take place all year round on daily itineraries.
